She had completed her B.A. literature and was doing her C.A. when films beckoned her. He debut film was the Malayalam 'Manassinakkare' where she had Jayaram as her hero, and Sathyan Anthikad as the director. Then came two films with Mohanlal. Her soft, pretty looks captured the attention of Malayalam film buffs and of director Hari too. He saw her photo in a magazine and soon Nayanthara was called by the Tamil director to act in 'Ayya', for the prestigious banner of K Balachander, with Sarath Kumar as hero. A scribe asked her about the casting couch. The actress didn't understand it. Someone from the back quipped 'compromises?'

Nayanthara again failed to catch it, had a hasty consultation with her manager and then replied, "I cannot really say anything right now. I'm very new to the Tamil industry."

On her future projects, she has 'Kalvanin Kadhali' with actor-director S J Suriya, 'Gajini' with hero Surya, 'Vallavan' with Simbu and two Malayalam films with Mammooty, 'Raapagal' and 'Thaskaraveera
